Check if any surfing restrictions are in force and adhere to them
Watch the surf (and other surfers) for at least 10 minutes in order to see where to paddle out
and catch waves
Carry out a warm-up for 3 - 5 minutes
Wax the whole of the top of the board thoroughly (unless you have deck grip or are using a soft board)
Carry the board under the arm, fin inwards
Steer well clear of other people on the way to the sea
Put your leash on
Paddling Out
Keep the nose of the board facing out to sea
Keep clear of surfers who are riding waves and of other water users
If a collision seems imminent stay still (or roll the board upside down above you) allowing the surfer riding the wave to take avoiding action
Don't try to intercept loose boards
Taking Off
See that you are well clear of other surfers and swimmers
Make sure that another surfer is not taking the wave - don't ‘drop in' on a surfer already riding the wave towards you
Remember that the first surfer on the wave has the right of way
Don't lose possession of your board in a ‘wipe out'. Use a leash.
Remember
In the sea, keep well clear of swimmers even if they are in the surfing area
When ashore, stow your board (and wetsuit) out of direct sunlight and not in the way of other people .
If in doubt about the conditions talk to a Lifeguard or and experienced surfer
If you are not covered by Public Liability Insurance, you are taking unnecessary risks and in some areas you are breaking the law - The British Surfing Association provides its members with free public liability insurance, which is valid Worldwide.
